Kom in de Kas
Last weekend, in the Netherlands was Kom in de Kas. Kom in de Kas, despite its slightly dodgy sounding name, means Come Into The Greenhouse and allows the general public to visit greenhouses and other agricultural type locations for free. The advertising wasn’t really all that great, especially as had a friend not told me about the weekend, I would never have known about it…but luckily she did!
During the week I had a quick look at what activities were happening in my area and was happy to find that there was one location that was going to be selling herbs. This was clearly going to be the top priority for me and anything else I managed to see was an extra bonus.
Finding the locations was fairly easy. Not only were all the details on the website but once you got nearby there were huge signs pointing you in the right direction. The herb venue was a little disappointing as it was only selling three types of herbs but at 50 cents a pot I quickly bought two of each. You could walk through the greenhouse and see all the herbs growing and they were also giving out free vegetable soup…yum!
A little bit further down the road was another greenhouse, larger than the last. This one was filled with lettuce and endive. The lettuce that we bought had just been pulled from the ground and was only 50 cents per piece. No free soup here but plenty of postcards, recipe cards and pens.
We only managed to fit in two venues because we had other plans for the day but I know other locations had flowers, honey, pancakes and many other activities/produce. Kom in de Kas will definitely be on the list of activities to attend next year, providing I actually see something that tells me when it is of course, and I will make sure to plan in a lot more venues this time!
Off to plant some herb plants…

Ooohhh...a kitchen window herb garden, very nice. I always had problems with the little flies...I think maybe with the parsley? So I moved everything out to the balcony.
Regio Voorne-Putten was not very well-marked, but the Plukmadepolder, in Brabant, was really well organized. Everything was close together as well, which helped. We parked and could walk to about 6 different places. Usually they are way more spread out than that. Perhaps next year the Hoeksche-Waard will participate again (that's where I live).
