Canals crisscrossed by delicate bridges, more bikes than you have ever seen and the faintest hint of pleasure in the air – Amsterdam – love it or hate it, the city is on more than a handful of people’s bucket list.
But with all that food to eat, beer to drink and museums to visit, Amsterdam can be a bit hard on the wallet, especially if you are on a budget. Luckily there are some things you can do to save a few Euros when you visit.
Here are three tips that will help you save some cash when visiting the city of Amsterdam:
1. Get an I amsterdam City Card – Available in 24, 48 or 72 hour increments, the I amsterdam Card not only provides you with free entrance to many of the top Amsterdam museums and attractions, it also provides you with freebies and discounts throughout the city. And if that wasn’t enough, the card also allows you to use the city’s public transport network (trams, buses, metro) for free, which will be a welcome surprise when you realize just how much there is to see and do in Amsterdam.

2. Swap Your Hotel for a Hostel – There are more than 350 hotels in the city of Amsterdam but with Amsterdam topping the polls for most expensive hotels, it can be painful to watch your holiday budget be eaten up by accommodation alone. So why not try booking a hostel instead? Not only are they good for the wallet, they also provide the perfect opportunity to meet new people and pick up some tips on places to go and things to see.
3. Do Your Research – There are plenty of travel related forums and websites out there to help you find low-cost options in the city. One site that provides a wealth of information, but is often overlooked, is Holland’s tourism site, Holland.com. Not only do they have a whole section on visiting the Netherlands on a budget, but there is even a list of the top 10 low-budget Amsterdam attractions (list on the right of the page).
Visiting Amsterdam doesn’t have to be as expensive as it first appears. A little bit of research and some full-price alternatives, will help out travellers with even the smallest of budgets!

I think Amsterdam is still one of my favourite places in Holland.
You must tell me all the secret places you love there. It isn't my favourite city by far but I do find that when you peel away the layers, you can find some cool places and things to do.
Amsterdam is on my bucket list, for sure. Thanks for the info.
My pleasure! :)
Great tips! I'm always looking for ways to visit a city on a budget. I think it's fantastic Amsterdam has a I Card. I wish these kinds of cards were available in more places.
I agree! Just the public transport part of the ticket is worth it alone in my opinion. Takes the hassle out of figuring it all out. Thanks for stopping by. :)
Some places have diamond cutting demonstrations for little to no cost. And, the city is so fun to walk around, taking in the outdoors is always free!
All very good tips! :)
