10 Things You Must Eat and Drink in the Netherlands

Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon. -Doug Larson

Bacon isn’t on this list but then again, neither are green vegetables. If you are heading to the Netherlands, then make sure you find at least a few of the items on this list and consume them with enjoyment.

  1. Poffertjes – Small, fluffy pancakes made with yeast and buckwheat flour. They have a light, spongy texture and are typically served with a lump of butter and then covered in powder sugar.
  2. Grolsch – A 5% pale lager often served in green bottles.
  3. Bastogne – A crunchy, almost oval shaped cookie with a caramelized sugar and cinnamon flavour.
  4. Vlaai – A pie made up of a flat dough bottom with raised edges and filled with fruit, rice and/or cream.
  5. Bossche Bol – A large ball of pastry, filled with whipped cream and coated in chocolate.
  6. Chocolate Letters – Chocolate shaped into different letters of the alphabet.
  7. Komijnekaas – A classic Dutch gouda-style cheese seasoned with cumin and caraway seeds.
  8. Rivella –  A carbonated soft drink made from milk whey and herbs.
  9. Oliebollen – A type of dumpling or doughnut made by dropping dough into a deep fryer filled with hot oil. The dough is made from flour, eggs, yeast, salt, milk and baking powder. Oliebollen are usually served with powdered sugar.
  10. Broodje Mario – An Italian bread roll baked fresh and then filled with two types of salami, carrot pieces, a type of celery, cheese and peppers.

What would you add to the list?

Yep. Holland is not the most health country to live in.

I would add that cheese-infused lightly spiced sausage that you can find in most butchers and is served at all family get-togethers. So tasty! I assume it's Dutch, I haven't found it anywhere else.

You can find it at most butchers and in the Albert Heijn as well, though it's not as good. It's called grillworst met kaas, you should definitely add it to your list. It's a firm family favourite here. :)

Added to the list. I think I have seen it now I think about it but I am pretty sure I haven't tried it yet.

Kibbeling and Hema worst. Can't live without them on my trips to Deventer. Not to mention hagelslag & bitterkoekje.

Also good additions to the list. I almost added hagelslag. I'm actually allergic to fish and seafood so can't join in on the kibbeling vote but I have to say that seasoning smells super delicious. I am always jealous of people eating it for the smell of the seasoning alone and I thought I would never be jealous of people eating fish!

My Oma makes the best meatballs which i only get when in Holland. They are made with Rusk and a special spice mix. They are huge and always served with potatoes. Yummy!!!

Hi Rosanne, now you are making me hungry. We have a butcher nearby that makes some really good meatballs but there is nothing better than an Oma recipe. :) Thanks for stopping by!

I'd add: Van Dobben or Kwekkeboom Kroket (with or without a broodje but never without mustard) Vocking Worst (only available in the Utrecht area. Also great on a broodje) Haagse Hopjes (coffee candy, available in most supermarkets) Nutricia Chocolate Milk (drink it cold in a mug) A nice fresh big warm Stroopwafel from the stand.

Stampot met rookworst. Veel gegeten toen ik op school was in Amsterdam in een studenten eetzaal. Je wast borden en krijg jou eten vrij.
