Dutch Delights: Vla

Dutch Delights: Vla

What:

Why:  Because it is yummy, that’s why!

Where:  Vla can be found in the supermarkets.

When:  Vla first appeared in the 1950s.  It is eaten as a dessert year-round.

Varieties:  Vla comes in several flavours and combinations, such as chocolate, caramel, vanilla and strawberry. Plain vanilla vla is frequently served with yoghurt and fruit syrup, earning it the name of vlaflip.

How Much [Should I Eat]:  As much as you can before you burst. :)

Pas Op! (Look Out!):  Before it was sold in cartons, vla was sold in glass bottles.  The consistency made getting the full contents out of the bottle difficult, so a special bottle scraper (“flessenschraper” or “flessenlikker”) was specifically designed.
