Dutch Delights: Onbijtkoek

Dutch Delights: Onbijtkoek

March 18, 2011 6 Comments 4644 views

What:  Onbijtkoek – a light brown, spiced cake made from rye and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, ginger and nutmeg.

Why:  Onbijtkoek, like kruidnoten, was a good way for the Dutch to show off the number of spices they were able to get their hands on.

Where:  Onbijtkoek is most commonly found in the grocery store.  You can purchase it as a loaf (sliced or unsliced) or in individually sliced and packaged portions (usually in packs of five slices).

When:  Onbijtkoek is available year round.  It is often eaten at breakfast (onbijt = breakfast, koek = cake) with a layer of butter on top.  However, due to its sweet flavour, it is also enjoyed as a snack.

Varieties: In addition to local recipe differences, there are also variations in flavours/types.  There are also less sugar, organic and light varieties.

How Much [Should I Eat]:  Onbijtkoek is very popular and quite tasty.  It is an interesting cake, sweet and a bit dry.

Pas Op! (Watch Out!):  Choose your brand wisely.  Verbal battles over whether Peijnenburg, Snelle Jelle or the store brand being best are not unheard of.

Haha I eat ontbijtkoek several times a week, for break(very)fast.
Btw I recently understood the true meaning of breakfast. It means breaking the fasting, and could therefore take place any time of day!

Sultana also have some little individually wrapped ones.. or at least they taste like them, but also have raisins in them. Marcel loves them.

I've never been too sure about this stuff. Sometimes I like it. sometimes I'm not too sure. I guess I have to be in the mood.

Do you eat it plain Johan or do you put something on top?

I think I have tried those Lori. They are a bit thicker too or am I thinking of something else?

I'm the same. Sometimes I like them and other times I find them too dry. But I also am not keen on putting stuff on top.
