Dutch Delights: Bastogne

What:  Bastogne – a crunchy, almost oval shaped cookie with a caramelized sugar and cinnamon flavour.

Why: Bastogne cookies were originally produced by the Belgian brand, Parein but the company LU brought the crispy cookies to the Dutch market.

Where: Bastogne cookies can be found in the cookie section of supermarkets. If the distinctive yellow and blue box colours don’t grab your eye, the huge ‘Bastogne!’ plastered across the box will.

When: No seasonal item here. Bastogne cookies are available year round.

Varieties: Bastogne original is marketed in a yellow and blue box. The original version has now been joined on the shelves by Bastogne Due, an almond and vanilla flavoured option. Bastogne Duo is found in a green, blue and white box.

How Much [Should I Eat]: Descriptions like “delicious crispy biscuits made with brown sugar” should give you a hint that this is not a cookie to skip. Several websites even claim that these “are the cookies that are consumed the most in Holland.”

Pas Op! (Watch Out!): Bastogne cookies tend to produce a lot of crumbs. If you want to hide your cookie eating evidence from others (or just don’t want to share your Bastogne stash) then these may not be the cookie for you. At the very least be extra vigilant for your crumbs and think twice before eating them in bed!

I can imagine! I love Bastogne but hadn't had them for awhile. I picked up a box last week and remembered what I was missing!

I'm bringing some home to the US when we visit in April, I think it's time they become familiar/addicted to them as well :)
