Monday Madness: Those Crazy Euthanizing Dutch Doctors

Usually my Monday Madness post focuses on the weird and crazy things that the Dutch get up to, but this week I’m afraid I need to stray a bit from this objective. The madness that I have come across is just too “mad” not to make it the focus of today’s post. At least as an added bonus the topic is about the Netherlands. Well actually it’s not but that’s part of the story. Recently, the republican presidential candidate, Rick Santorum, said that old people in the Netherlands are being euthanized against their will. According to Santorum, the elderly here are...

Monday Madness: Free to Take

Not everything that is free is worth taking, especially if you don’t like snakes. At a school in Haarlem, an unknown man (or woman) left behind a white plastic box with the words “gratis mee to nemen” (free to take) on the outside. However, if you were expecting some hidden treasure then you were in for a big disappointment as inside the box was not an old game system, some great clothes or even a pile of books but instead two snakes. The snakes, harmless corn snakes, have been taken into quarantine where they will stay for the next two weeks before being found a new...

Monday Madness: The Lamppost That Kissed Back

You would think that by the year 2012, a warning wouldn’t be needed any more.  You know the warning I mean.  The one that is given every year when the temperatures drop and everything becomes frozen. Yes, yes…that warning…don’t stick your tongue on a frozen lamppost. We have all heard it and I assume we have all headed its advice.  Yet there is always going to be one person, somewhere, who just can’t resist the temptation especially if the temptation involves a bet.  And that is precisely how one 16-year old girl in Nieuwegen found herself attached to a...

Monday Madness: Stolen Bicycle Found After 17 Years

You step out of the train station and head to where you parked your bike, only for your heart to drop into the pit of your stomach.  As you check and recheck the portion of fence you are certain you chained your much loved two wheel transportation method to, you know what has happened…your bike has been stolen. It may take awhile but after a few days/weeks/months, you let it go, you move on and maybe you even buy a new bike. But for one lady in Klazienaveen, Drenthe perhaps she should have extended the grieving process a little longer, because after 17 years missing, her stolen bike...

Monday Madness: A Naked Wiggling Bum on the Motorway

A bum being wiggled at you as you drive down the A2 is the last thing you expect to see.  However, if you were driving on the A2 near Maastricht around 16:00 on Sunday then this is exactly what you were likely to see. Police fined a 24-year old Belgian who had his pants around his knees and was waving his derrière to passers-by.  The motive for the act was unexplained but the scent of alcohol in the air gave agents a pretty good idea of what the cause just might have been. And what is the fine for bouncing your bum in public on the motorway? 100 Euros per...

Monday Madness: Get Out of the Closet

“Police talk burglar out of the closet” It’s not a typical headline you expect to see but for one burglar in Scheveningen, the closet seemed the best option. The 29-year old was seen climbing over the balcony fence by neighbours who alerted the police.  When the police arrived to check it out, the suspect climbed inside a closet that was standing on the balcony.  After repeated calls from the agents, the burglar finally gave-up and was arrested. Sounds like he was having a great start to the New Year!
