Cloggie Created Confusion

Posted in Life in the Netherlands

Sometimes the Cloggies really confuse me.  I have gradually adjusted to their lack of customer service, their desire to eat objects that have the texture of baby food with the occasional lump of unidentifiable meat in it and even their obligatory birthday circle.  However, when I was flipping through the advertisements that are shoved in our postbox a few times a week (yes, I know I can put the sticker on the outside to say I don’t want them but then I would miss gems like this!), I stumbled across this little find.

At first glance you would think nothing of the well known Blokker selling a toaster, kettle and coffee maker but look closer.  Yes, that’s right.  The Dutch shop, Blokker, is trying to sell to the Dutch population, appliances with ‘dutch design’ decorations.  Why in heaven’s name would a Dutch person want to buy something like a toaster with little blue wooden shoes and a windmill on it?!?!  Not to mention, they aren’t even that nicely done (apologies straight-away to the inevitable reader who has just gone out and purchased these but it’s true, they even have the same two pictures on each appliance).

Now I will admit, I do have one of those delft-blue Dutch tiles hanging in the bathroom, but I am not a full-blooded Cloggie and it is only one small item.  I think that is perfectly acceptable.  On the other hand, any Cloggie that is sporting the whole range of Dutch Design kitchen appliances does concern me.  The only thing I can say, is that if you are contemplating getting these you will have extra time to re-consider your decision, since we all know that anything that shows up in the Blokker sales folder is not actually available for purchase.

Off to scratch my head in confusion…

  1. mm yeah, I'm sorry but they are horrid. I'm not full blooded Dutchie either and I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole. I don't think they'll be selling many of those.

  2. Accept

  3. I share your confusion. It's like me buying a tea bot with Big Ben on it… I would never do it.

  4. So you won't be decking out your kitchen in full delft-blue attire then? ;)

  5. There seems to be a trend because Xenos now has everything from toilet covers to toilet paper with this delft blue design!

  6. Woah! I just noticed this flood of Delfts blauw in the latest Xenos ad! They even sell matching toilet paper!
I too know no Cloggie who will buy this. However, I do know a handful of Americans with Dutch heritage who will in a heartbeat ;-)

  7. Whoops, I just noticed in your comment below how you too noted this about the Xenos ad. I see you do like to look through the ads ;-)

  8. No worries! And yes, I love looking through the ads…although there are a few that go straight in the recycling. :)
