Recently I had been considering signing up for the Pathe Unlimited Card at the local cinema. The Unlimited card basically gives you unlimited (surprise, surprise!) access to all the films at the cinema for a monthly fee. To make it worth the monthly fee, you need to go and see at least two films a month. I had gone over the pro’s and con’s several times. However, after looking through all 24 pages of films expected to be in the cinema in 2010, I decided that there were enough films there for me to get my money out of the card and decided to sign-up.
My friend Tammy, who also was getting the card, and I headed off to the cinema to get our Pathe Unlimited cards and to see the film Brothers while we were at it. We decided to show up about thirty minutes before the start of the film, assuming that thirty minutes would be enough time to fill out a form, have our photos taken and get our tickets…boy were we wrong.
The Slowest Sign-Up Ever
Since we had studied the website, we were quite clear that we had to go to the special service desk, which we did. However, there was no one there and even after another staff member called for an employee on the special walkie talkie devices, ten minutes later we were still waiting. Finally one of the employees arrived, however he had no keys to actually get behind the service desk counter. This appeared to be something he was quite used to as he just hopped right over the counter and started up the screen. Unfortunately, this was not to be the start of the speedy process we had imagined.
Instead it was painfully slow. He didn’t know how to deal with our International passports, how to turn on the payment machine and various other little things. To give him some credit, he was very nice and it was his first day doing this task and he clearly wasn’t receiving any support from his manager or fellow employees. We did finally get our cards and after some rather firm insistence we also got to skip the queue for the tickets and get them straight away. Although, even with our queue jumping we still didn’t make it into the cinema by the start time. Luckily, all we missed were one or two adverts.
Brothers
For those of you that are unfamiliar with it, it features Natalie Portman, Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhall. Sam (Maguire) who is married to Grace (Portman) and has two daughters with her, heads off to Afghanistan with the military. When he goes missing, presumed dead, the family back home tries to get on with their lives and that includes Sam’s brother Tommy (Gyllenhall) who helps and comforts Grace and the children. When Sam is rescued and returns home there are a number of issues that they all have to work through from Sam’s mental health issues to Grace and Tommy’s relationship. The film itself was really good, although a bit more heavy than expected.
I have already started making a list of all the films I want to see, now that I can go for ‘free’ and am really looking forward to it. I had forgotten how much fun going to the cinema can be.
Happy cinema visiting…
